28 June 2010 Music has a positive effect on exam results in all subjects
Casio calls for music funding in schools as research reveals that music education has a positive effect on exam results across many subjects
The survey of 2000 people showed that of all students who achieved 11 GCSEs at grades A*-C, the percentage of those who also played the piano was higher. In addition from all those questioned those with no musical background achieved on average 7 GCSEs grade A*-C, less than their musical counterparts.
The research also revealed that over 80% of people in the UK have at one time or another had lessons in playing a musical instrument, however, shockingly well over half were not able to develop their skills to a reasonable level due to financial barriers and lack of resource in schools.
63% of survey respondents stated that lessons were too expensive for them to continue and in the case of upcoming talent, 41% cited poor facilities in schools and 29% not enough teaching resources to facilitate lessons as the strongest reasons why children were hindered in their musical development. Supporting the findings into exam results 63% of those who did keep playing felt it had actually helped improve their educational achievement.
As a result of the research, Casio and EMI Music Sound Foundation have launched a UK wide initiative fronted by classical sensation Myleene Klass, the Pianos for Schools initiative. The scheme will see 50 pianos given to children in schools throughout the UK and aims to ensure children with budding musical talent are given the best opportunity to get them playing, develop their skills and become the superstars of tomorrow.
Myleene Klass says; “We know that in order to flourish, children need all round education in subjects from sport and maths to music and this research highlights this. Obviously my passion is music and I would love to see more support in schools in this area. Schemes like this can give children who may not otherwise get the chance to engage with music in school the opportunity to and this can only enhance their all round learning experience and build a good bank of talent we can rely on in the future.”
Tim Gould from Casio says; “Investment must be made to ensure we give children every opportunity to succeed in school and support should be given across all subjects to allow children to develop their all round educational experience and ultimately results. By partnering with EMI Music Sound Foundation on the Pianos for School initiative we’re aiming to give children who otherwise may not have the opportunity to engage in music access to cutting-edge instruments and encourage and all round educational experience.”
Janie Orr,Chief Executive EMI Music Sound Foundation says; “This research endorses our own findings that the majority of secondary schools sponsored by the Foundation have seen an improvement in all examination results due to the high importance with which they value Music and Performing Arts. We are delighted to support this scheme to provide more schools with pianos they would otherwise be unable to afford.”
The research also found that 68% of those questioned who hadn’t learnt to play the piano wish they had done so whilst half of all respondents also felt that there was not as much musical talent coming through in current times as in previous decades.
